Kiteboarding gear suggestions
Hey everyone! I'm interested in kiteboarding. I started wind-surfing about 3 years ago and have been enjoying it, during the summers, ever since. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to WHAT and WHERE to buy kiteboarding gear. Like... What is a good size kite to own in MN? I'm looking for a more universal set of equipment that can be used in a wide range of wind. Any ideas???
Re: Kiteboarding gear suggestions
I'D GUESS THAT THE MOST POPULAR KITE AROUND HERE IS THE SS TURBO DIESEL, EITHER II OR 3. Alot of the deciding factors, though, are your weight, wind strength, & the surface you want to ride. Most brands now make good beginner to intermediate level kites. I would avoid super high aspect kites, and stick to bow or hybrid bow designs, and stay away from c-kites at first. The mfgrs. usually publish average wind ranges for each type, and you can find a list of local reps on this site who can suggest the best kite for you.

Re: Kiteboarding gear suggestions
One good option is trying a demo kite at one of our local events. You can also find a team or store rider out on the lake to explain or demo their gear. If you plan on sticking with the sport you should expect to buy at least two kite sizes. If you have kites around 9m and 14m you should cover the majority of our local conditions. You will be riding your larger kite 80% of the summer but during the winter you can expect to ride your smaller kite maybe half the time. The kite I ride the majority of the time is my Slingshot 14mT3 but my 13m Octane is becoming a close second.
We have two local stores you can check out: I recommend talking to Larry at Scuba Center or checking out Midwest Mountaineering.

Thank you guys! I really appreciate it. I'll check that stuff out. I'll probably end-up getting a 13-14m sail to start out w/. Thanks again!
Re: Kiteboarding gear suggestions
Honestly DePowers aren't typically recommended as a first kite. A lot of people start with a 3-4m fixed bridle like an HQ Beamer or similar. Good opportunity to fly in a variety of conditions and get respect for the wind.
Re: Kiteboarding gear suggestions
Good point! I thought he wanted the most popular kite, but you're right. It is better to start out with a small 2 to 3 meter trainer at first. I made the mistake of buying a 4 meter with the thought of using it for a "high-wind" kite. I still remember the power drag across Mille Lacs when I was trying learn snowboarding, too. It actually scraped the skin off my nose. Now I NEVER say,"No skin..." Luckily Jason Jones chased me down, & Todd (Kiteboy) gave me some pointers.
So, HANS, learn form my mistakes. Please, DON'T BUY A 14 METER & GO OUT WITHOUT LESSONS!!! Get comfortable flying a trainer first like Jules reccomends, then graduate to the 4-line depowerable class.
