Sand can "cut" and cause holes in windsurf board

Post by Quetzalcoatl »

Windsurfers: be careful when you come off the water and lay your rig on the beach.

If it's a perfectly sandy beach...be aware that if you leave the board on it's side and strong wind is pushing aqainst
it..it can rock back and forth the edge of windsurf board and "literally" cut into (maybe many small grandular size cuts) into
the edge of the board. Sand is "really" miniature pieces of glass. This happened to me one Very Windy early spring day.
When I came off the water, I laid my sail down and board in front of sail with board on it's side perfectly perpendicular to beach. I know most sailors lay board upside down on top of the sail. I always thought that this causes the tendon of U-joint
to be left in a bent position and wear out it prematurely. So, I often (in the past) would do it my way...with board up on it's side facing the wind.
Well, when I got home,,my board went inside the house with me and I kept having drops of water appear on about four inches of length on one side of the board. I'd wipe...and drops kept coming. I though about my method of board on it's side on the beach and I came up with my idea about sand cutting into the edge of the board (where the plastic planes come together).
I later read about this happening to other windsurfers on I-windsurf.com. So, I think it's a reality,,,and it's not just me!

From now on...I'm going to lay my board upside down on top of the sail when I leave the board on the beach.

I guess I'll just take a chance that it doesn't bend the U-joint tendon too much.

Quetzalcoatl out.
