Windsurfing and Kiteboarding have advantages when you use life vests or lifejackets when sailing in our deep water
lakes in Minnesota.
Often I hear sailors say,..."I can't wear a lifejacket because it gets in the way of my harness hook."
Well, yes this is true if it's your standard lifejacket. But,,a kayak life vest rides (usually) higher up then a lifejacket, thus
there is space for the hook not to get tangled with vest. Or you can buy a special life vest for windsurfing/kiteboarding which
costs around 80 bucks new and is designed to give room for harness hook. Also the Impact vest with harness hook is an option. I've used all three,,but lately I enjoy using my Kayak vest with my seat harness. Costs around 25 bucks at any sportsman shop..like at the place that's starts with a C...(just off I-35 in Owatanna) The nice think about having the extra flotation is that during deep water starts....if I'm waiting for a good gust to pick me up onto the board...I'm just floating and relaxing...not have to keep kicking my legs while trying to waterstart. The life vest is a great boost!
Of course I don't even bring my live vest to S. Padre Island when windsurfing in the chest deep water of the Laguna Madre.
The Life vest is just another nice option, that's all.
Windsurfing on the Rise!
Quetzalcoatl out.
Kayak life vests don't get in the way of the Harness hook...
