How is the ice?

Post by stevenP »

I stopped by Calhoun yesterday and wasn't sure if it was still safe. Did anyone go out yesterday and give it a test?

the word from the lake is that it is a solid block of ice. The surface is hard and not seeming to be softening up any today.

I'm going back to work.

I had a great early day on Forest Lake yesterday and had a meeting in Mpls. late afternoon. Wind was still great, blue sky, ...perfect....except for those stupid signs they leave up all winter all around Lake Calhoun. There's just something about not wanting to be the "only" one to ignore the signs...tempting fate...so I passed. It really was an aweful feeling, suspecting there's still two feet of ice, but not wanting to defy authority's warning.
It seems to be a place somewhere between fear and wisdom...no matter, it never feels good to walk away from a potentially awesome session.

Anyway, Tom, I can relate.
Ride...just be it!

I never winced once and headed out on Spring again tonight. The two feet of ice will probably even make it through the weekend but it will be going fast in the upper 50's. Darn gusty SE winds are a trick though. Might have been my last session though as the wind look like they will be between my kites in the next couple of days; TBD!
ENJOY :) ........... Bill

Calhoun was OK today

Post by stevenP »

Safety in numbers. I went by Calhoun around 3 or 4 and saw that Jeff & Al (?) were there and planing to go out. There was small border of water at the edge but the ice was fine and had softened up so you could get an edge. I wouldn't have gone out alone but with a couple others, I felt safe enough. It was quite fast. In fact, I topped my fastest speed record today and got going 48 mph. Quite a rush.
